New Year's Reflections

I've noticed most bloggers are posting about the new year: memories of this now past 2011, trials, triumphs, lessons, and joys. Also plans for the coming year: plans for drawing closer to God, learning more of His ways, spending time with family and friends, or pursuing various hobbies/professions more diligently. It is wonderful to see how the rolling over of a new fragment of time causes so many people to pause and reflect.

To every [thing there is] a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. - Ecclesiastes 3:1

To be frank though, I have never been one for making too much of a fuss about new year. To me, new year's day is simply another day, and my family has never really put it aside as anything special. (for example, today is new year's day and I hung washing) The passing of time is something of a mystery to me every day, and should I happen to stop and think about it then, it is much more of a marvel to me then in my own pondering than it is on the day given solely to its remembrance.

It is easy for me to look back and see all the things I've done wrong in my life. When I look at the times past, all the places I have erred are so easy to distinguish. At times, I wonder if I have grown more like Jesus at all. Yet though the Bible often reminds us to look back in time, it is not for condemnation, but to remember the lessons we learnt and the mercy we received in the times we failed.

[It is of] the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. [They are] new every morning: great [is] thy faithfulness. - Lamentations 3:22-23

God's mercy is new every morning! Though we can choose a day to celebrate the passing of time, isn't it more breathtaking and wonderful to know that the mercy of God - who is the beginning and end of all time - is made new every single day of our lives? The way we measure time matters not to our Father in heaven. We can make goals, we can set ourselves tasks, we can imagine time frames, but God always has perfect timing.

I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty. - Revelation 1:8

Though we all must plan for the days to come, I love the knowledge that I can leave my future in the hands of the Father of all Time. He is the Ancient of Days, the Everlasting. How precious it is to know that our lives - all of our days - rest in Him, so that we need never worry for what the future may bring.

Behold, thou hast made my days [as] handbreadths; And my life-time is as nothing before thee. - Psalms 39:5a

Life is so short. Though our time is in God's hands, I pray that He helps us spend what He has given us, wisely.

For I know the plans I have for you: plans for a future, and for a hope. - Jeremiah 29:11

Amen. What an assuring truth is the Sovereignty of God, and our trust that no matter what may come each new year, He is the Lord and Author of all. Great post, BushMaid.
